Does A Ferret Make A Good Pet?

Have you thought about getting a ferret as a pet? Surprisingly they make very good pets!

Ferrets are closely related to the weasel, skunk and otter. Their temperament is thought to be a mixture between a cat and dog. Much like cats and dogs each ferret’s personality is different. Some like to be cuddled but others are very independent.

The average size of a male ferret is around 45cm in length and weigh between 1.2-2.3kg. Females are much smaller at about 35cm in length and can weigh anywhere between 500 grams and 1.2kg on average.

The positive aspects of keeping ferrets are that they’re highly social and inquisitive. They can be trained to use litter and can be walked on a harness. The negatives of ferrets are that they’re high maintenance. They need to be entertained quite a bit and can be very mischievous.

Ferrets are happiest in pairs or small groups, so if get a ferret be prepared to have at least two. If you are thinking about getting a ferret, check out your local RSPCA to see if they have any ferrets for adoption.
